The ruling BJP and Congress parties are to launch a campaign to ban uranium mines, the country’s top nuclear regulator said on Tuesday.
The Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) is expected to issue a directive on Wednesday against coal mines and other nuclear projects, a move that could boost the prospects of a landmark U.N. ban on uranium mining.
The ban is due to be implemented at the end of 2020.
The NSSG, which is tasked with supervising the countrys nuclear plants, had previously announced that it would ban uranium mining and reprocessing in 2021.
It has been widely seen as a bid to halt India’s uranium production, which accounts for around two percent of its energy needs.
India has long argued that it should not be responsible for uranium that it has produced.
The government has said it has the right to use uranium for its own national needs.
